Use Caution Making Money Online
If you're like me you have some fairly unique experiences that you take for granted. Those experiences mean that you can share information with others that may never have occurred to them. By sharing some of my experiences I hope to enlighten you so that you can avoid mistakes that could cost your business a lot of money.
I grew up in a family with people who regularly gambled. My dad played poker regularly and I remember a couple times saying good night when the poker game was going on. I also remember getting up in the morning for school and when my dad and his buddies noticed me they decided to quit their poker game and go to work!
We also went to the racetrack as Del Mar was just a few miles away from our Encinitas, California home. I think I made my first bet at the "track" at age 12. I looked older than my age and I'm also guessing that they didn't really want to waste time asking me for a driver's license. They wanted my money and to be able to get on to the next bettor.
Do people online operate that way? Do they just want your money and then they'll move on to the next "bettor"? Some people in life operate that way. Online and offline. That doesn't mean that everyone does. It's important to remember that there are honest people as well as dishonest ones. Also, some aren't dishonest so much as they are incompetent for what they are doing. Then there are those who are taught intentionally inaccurate information by dishonest people, but they believe the person who taught them. They may then go on to teach inaccurate information themselves all the while believing that the information is true. What if that student then goes on to teach that same inaccurate information? They probably don't even have a connection to the original dishonest person and are simply learning from someone who was unknowingly deceived.
My guess is that many of us have found ourselves in the last group at one time or another. How can you avoid this?
What follows is one scenario that might not have occurred to you.
You receive an email that says you can get the same information that others have used to win seven football bets in a row. This service will sell you next week's **Special** pick for $40. You read over the letter carefully and wonder if this is true. How can they be so accurate? It certainly looks legitimate. (I know some will assume that it's not legitimate SIMPLY BECAUSE it involves gambling, but don't miss the lesson. It's important NOT to let preconceived ideas get in the way of real learning.)
You think about how much you have available to bet and decide that you can spare $400. They have 3000 satisfied customers who have won seven times in a row! So you think, if I bet this "sure thing" I'll get back hundreds of dollars and it will only cost me $40. Too good to be true? Maybe.
Before I go any further, let me point out that not all sites related to gambling are the same. Many will give you an honest deal. Whether or not someone should gamble is a matter of opinion about which there is a wide chasm of disagreement. Also, some people are terrible with numbers and that can work against you in gambling.
This is an example of how someone can be scamming you and I'll talk about how this can apply to business later.
So how can they be telling the truth about having 3000 customers who have won seven bets in a row? Is it too late to get in on this deal? Hold the phone.
First, remember that the internet has billions of people on it. Even conservative estimates put the number of internet users over a billion. Twitter is closing in on 200 million accounts. Facebook has almost a billion users by itself.
Let's say that someone did a really great job and has a huge email list of 500,000 people. And they have ads that run on many websites so that they can get a large number of responses.
If they get 192,000 people to pay for their service they can then tell half of them to pick the San Diego Chargers to beat the Green Bay Packers in week 1. The other half are told to bet on Green Bay. Maybe they give away their service for free to all those week 1 customers. For our example it doesn't matter.
Because there are only two teams playing in a football game there are only two possible winners. When they give half their customers one team and the other half the opponent of that team, they are guaranteed to have 96,000 winners.
So 96,000 people participate in week 2. Half of them receive Team A as the pick and half of them are told that Team B will win. Again, half of their customers are guaranteed to win.
Then 48,000 people receive the winner in week 3 and 48,000 are told to bet the loser.
At the beginning of week 4 there are still 48,000 people who haven't lost a bet.
At the beginning of week 5 there are still 24,000 people who have won every week.
At the beginning of week 6 there are still 12,000 people who have won every week.
So at the beginning of week 7 there are 6,000 people who have won every single week.
Finally, at the beginning of week 8 - when they contact you - they have THREE THOUSAND people who have won SEVEN TIMES IN A ROW!
We could break it down further. I'm sure that many people would have been very happy to win 6 out of 7 games or even 5 out of 7. Some might be hoping for better results in the future after winning 4 out of 7 bets or even 3 out of 7.
Life and business are not always as simple as football games. Sometimes there are more than two options (or more than two possible winners).
Hopefully you see how someone could be fooled by an offer like this.
What if someone said that the pick was guaranteed or your money back? Or maybe they guarantee you your money back within 7 days or even 30 or 60 or 90 days?
What if someone says they have this incredible software to sell you? Could they use a system similar to the one described above?
If they sell 800 orders at $2000 apiece that's ONE MILLION SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS!
What if people don't follow through in time?
I used to have a neighbor who did the sound system for seminars. He knew of this one seminar where they sold all these services to business owners for around $195. There were a lot of different things included and I asked how they could sell it so cheaply.
He told me that 2/3 of the business owners left the seminar and then never followed through to get the services they had bought. The seminar company knew that on average nearly 7 out of 10 of these business owners would simply spend money and not contact the company again once they left the seminar and got busy back home with their business.
Human beings are imperfect.
Have you ever not gotten a refund or a rebate or money back somehow because you didn't take action within the time allowed? Or because you didn't fill out the rebate form correctly?
If someone didn't take action in time they probably wouldn't get a refund. So it's likely they would be counted among the SATISFIED customers.
If the software company selling software for $2000 gave refunds to half their customers they would still have EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS.
And if they gave refunds to 90% of their customers they would still have $160,000.
Is it possible that 10% of their customers had more skill than the other customers or got lucky with their particular business?
Is it possible that 2% of their customers got lucky or had more skill and that 8% of them simply didn't ask for a refund in time?
I'm not saying that deception must be what is going on. I'm simply saying that it's possible.
Be careful when you buy into money making opportunities.

So, use the present tense as much as possible. Thus, you say that this product does this; you feel this; not it will do this, or you will feel.
Make it sound easy. Don't talk about the buyer having to do anything! Rather, talk about the product doing it for them. You can also be more specific here, like adding a time frame. This also goes out to how the customer will have to order or communicate with you. If it's hard enough or it involves a lot of complicated steps, they will most likely give up.
Finally, re-state your benefits before closing the sale. Bolster enthusiasm just before you ask for the money. Remind them what they get, and what they miss out on if they do.

These are the kings of persuasion and while you may not support their often hard sell approach and some of their exaggerations, there is quite a lot we can learn from them as far as marketing is concerned. Finding Your Passion in Life and Turning It Into a Business
Is this your dream? Do you long to pack up your current job and set up your own business doing something you really enjoy, something that truly fulfills you, something that really helps others to improve their lives in some way? What's the main barrier that is standing in your way of realising this dream? Is it that you don't know what your passion is? Do you feel that you don't really excel at any one thing? In this article I intend to give you some tips on how you can get started in finding your passion in life so that you can turn it into a business.
I know how it feels and was in this dilemma myself not too long ago. You look around at the people you know and seem to be able to see exactly what their passions and talents are yet can't pin down what it is that really motivates and excites you. Herein lies one clue as to how you can start to uncover what your passion and purpose is: ask your friends and family. Go out and do a bit of a survey. Ask those closest to you to tell you what they consider to be your strengths and interests. This can be very revealing. One particular question that is great to ask is, "What type of problem would you turn to me for help with?"
Another great exercise to do is to sit down with a blank piece of paper and write the following question at the top, "What would my ideal work day be like?" Then let your imagination go and write down in as much detail as possible what you would do, see, hear, experience and achieve on your deal work day. Where would you be working? Who would you be working with? How long would you be working for? Even if this doesn't help you completely identify your passion, it will help you get very clear on the criteria that you are looking for in your ideal business.
There are many more ways to find your passion but I'll give you just one more idea to try. Think about your current challenges and ones that you have overcome in the past. Would you like to help people break through and overcome similar challenges? What would you most like to do for and help your family and close friends with? Ultimately this was one of the keys for me personally in unlocking what I wanted to build my purpose-driven business around.

Writing a Great Bio
A bio can be used on your website, social networking profiles and many other online avenues. It's there to let other people know more about you and what you are good at. It also tells people important information like what you do for a living. A bio does a very important job, and can help us out professionally. A bio unfortunately also sticks out like a sore thumb when it is too short and inadequate. The other side of this is if it is too long. You don't want your audience to get bored and stop reading. If you worked as a sales manager for 15 years and were just promoted to district manager for your company, you would have a great deal to say in your bio. Remember that your bio is just as important as a business card, and in fact it does many of the same things a good business card should do. A good business card will both inform and intrigue the viewer and do it in a professional way. A person looking at a good business card will be at least slightly intrigued and will have a good feeling about its owner just by looking at the card. A bio should do the same thing. With a bio, it's much easier to go into further detail than a business card. You won't be limited to a small piece of paper to get your point across.
A great bio should do several things. It should inform the viewer about relevant information you want them to know, it should highlight your strengths much in the same way that a resume does and it should give the viewer a sense of your professionalism. It should also provide some sense of your personality so that your target market can relate to you on a personal level as well. The last and most important thing that a bio should do is emphasis the skills that you possess that will demonstrate that you are the person that will suit their business needs.
You should also highlight your strengths and downplay your weaknesses. Just like you would do in a resume, where you try to portray yourself in the best light possible, do the same in a bio. If your big strength is multitasking, than you should absolutely mention it in the bio you write. Think of some great things about yourself that you would include in a resume, these are pure gold for a bio. If you're having trouble thinking of things to include ask a friend to list your strengths for you. You'll be surprised what they might say. Sometimes it's hard to think of our own virtues but it's easy for others to see them. One thing that many cannot agree on is whether to include some personal interests or hobbies in your bio. I think that is something that should be included but not be a major part. For example, I would say that I am married with a son. I would also include a few of my hobbies. Then I would leave it at that. This provides my potential clients with a sense that I am a person and possibly someone that shares a common interest.
The last and most important aspect of a good bio is professionalism. Unless your bio is just for fun and is in no way tied to your occupation, you must strive to be as professional as possible. Remember to think of your bio as sort of an extended business card, or as a resume; its job is very similar. When using a bio in a business sense, its main job is to tell the world how great you are and, more to the point, how professional you are. This means having well written, complete sentences. It means having no spelling errors whatsoever. Have someone proofread your bio before posting on your website. Often having an extra set of eyes can make the difference when writing a great bio. The last part of a professional bio simply comes down to pure quality. If you aren't a strong writer then perhaps you should have someone else write it for you. Tell them the overall message you want to give and sit with them as they write it, giving them some guidance. It may seem drastic to have someone else write it for you, but if writing is not your strength you may end up showing yourself in a less than favorable light, which defeats the purpose of a bio in the first place. Two other important points that I must mention are: write your bio in the third person (this sounds more professional) and update your bio on a regular basis. You want your bio to shine you in the best light possible and provide an accurate portrayal of your skills and experience.

How To Make Money Online - Step 3, The Niche
Welcome to Step 3, the third article in a seven part series that explains how you can make money online by starting an online business.
So what is a niche? Niche in marketing terms actually means a distinct segment of a market. For example, if we take the health market to represent all different topics to do with health - then weight loss could be a niche within the health market. So in terms of making money online by creating your own online business, niche refers to the particular subject matter that your website/blog is going to be about. Your area of expertize if you like.
So what are you good at... golf, playing the guitar, sales? Alternatively, what experiences have you gone through that may be of use to others... have you gotten over a divorce, beaten cancer, or found a good way to cope with, or beat depression? Is there a topic that you are really interested in, or passionate about, like... east Indian cooking, rehabbing houses, collecting jokes from around the world? Another great way to find a niche is to partner with someone who already has 'access' to a niche. One of your friend's, for example, might be five foot ten - but is able to dunk a basketball! I'm sure there are millions of people who are around that height, and would love to learn how to jump high enough to dunk. What I am getting at here, is that you need to select a niche in which you will be able to offer some value. The easiest and most popular way to do this is to show people how to do something, or solve a particular problem or 'pain'.
OK, say you are an expert on the life of Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry the eighth. Would that make a good niche for your website/blog? Well, I'm sure it would be interesting for a very small, select handful, of history buffs - but the simple answer would have to be 'no'. The reason being, that in order for you to have a chance to monetize your website/blog, your niche will really need to satisfy a couple of criteria. It will need to be large enough to support all the players/competition involved in that niche, and it will need to consist of people with expendable income.
Still not sure what niche to go for? No problem. Let's do a little research and see what niches are popular, and maybe a light bulb will go off in your head. There are already many companies out there that spend millions of dollars on research into what people are looking for, and what solutions they can provide. The most readily available sources are magazines and books. If a company takes the time to create a paid magazine or book, then you can bet that there is a market out there for that topic. This fulfills the criteria we mentioned above where a niche has to be large enough and have expendable income. If you look up 'how to books' in Google you will find an assortment of good books from where you can drill down into their list of categories to find useful niches. So magazines and books are great resources to help in your search for a niche.
Since you are going to be operating online, it would be nice to know how many people are actually searching online for the niche you have selected. This will indicate the approximate size of the market. Google has a great keyword search tool that will tell you how many people search for your particular keyword (niche) every month. It will also provide a basic indicator (low, medium, high) as to whether that keyword (niche) has a lot of competition, or other people like you in the same niche.
So for example, if you do a search for the keyword 'migraine cure' using the Google Keywords Tool you will see that there are approximately 74,000 global monthly searches and the competition is medium. This tells us that the market is very large, but there is quite a lot of competition. Ideally, we would like to have a large market, anywhere above say 4,000 global monthly searches, with low competition.
